Highs around 90 and lows near 63 this week, which is the first real hint that summer is thinking about packing up. The afternoons are still shorts weather, but the evenings have some bite to them now.
There's storm potential in the mix, so the sky may well have opinions later in the day.
Around Town This Week
Holbrook High boys soccer hosts the Williams Vikings at Holbrook High School. Kickoff is at 6pm. Come pack the sideline and cheer on the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners host Monument Valley at Roadrunner Stadium. Bring the family out for a Friday night of Holbrook football. Go Roadrunners.
The volleyball team plays away twice this week, at Joseph City on Monday at 6pm and at Blue Ridge on Wednesday at 6:30pm. The next home game is Tuesday, September 8 against Coolidge.
Close enough now that it's worth planning for. The Rat Rod Magazine Route 66 tour reaches Holbrook next Sunday, part of an 8 state, 7 day, 1,800 mile run down Route 66. The public is invited to line West Hopi Drive as the convoy comes through, then head over to Motherload Market where the crew stops for lunch and puts the rigs on display. The flyer lists 12:30 PM, with the exact arrival time still to be announced.

Wile E. Coyote finally goes after the company that sold him every anvil and rocket that ever backfired, with Will Forte and John Cena along for the ride. It's PG and it runs an easy hour and forty, so this is the rare one you can bring the whole family to without checking anything first.
Showtimes: Sunday at 3pm, Monday at 7pm, Thursday and Friday at 7pm, and Saturday at 3pm and 7pm. The Roxy is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

The 95th Navajo County Fair and Rodeo runs a full week at the Navajo County Fairgrounds in Holbrook. Gates open Wednesday, September 16 with opening ceremonies at 5:30 pm, and the fun runs through Sunday, September 20. Details
The Navajo County Fair and Rodeo hosts its 2nd Annual Rodeo Scramble Golf Tournament at Hidden Cove Golf Course. Three-man teams, with buckles and cash going to the winners. Sign-in starts at 8 AM and tee off is at 9 AM, and it lands right in the middle of fair and rodeo week. Details
The Navajo County Fair and Rodeo puts on its 5K, 10K and 2-mile run and walk on the Saturday morning of fair week. Everything starts from the Navajo County U of A Cooperative Extension office parking lot at 478 North 3rd Street, out at the fairgrounds. Details
Pedal the Petrified is back. NPC Friends & Family hosts this non-competitive cycling tour through Petrified Forest National Park to raise money for Northland Pioneer College student scholarships. Details

Talk of the Town
The A&W is closed. The sign is still standing at the Gulf station on the corner of Hopi and Navajo, which is the part throwing people off, but the A&W behind it has served its last.
The place changed hands. Vince Farr sold the business, and the new owners came in from California. The convenience store is still open and still doing business, though a good chunk of it is torn up for a renovation at the moment, so expect it to look different in there for a while yet.
There's a new crosswalk on Hopi, running between Safeway and the Family Dollar. If you've driven that stretch around the middle of the day you already know exactly why it's there. That's the crossing kids use when they come off campus to grab something to eat.
It's a small thing. It's also the kind of small thing that matters at the precise moment a driver isn't expecting somebody to step off the curb. Give it a look next time you're through there, and take your foot off the gas.
Holbrook Lore
The man who built Holbrook's first brick building
Louie Ghuey came over from China around 1880, nineteen years old, and landed in a country that was about to make it as hard as it legally could for people like him to stay. He got to Holbrook anyway and spent roughly eighteen years here, and in that time he built more of this town than most people ever do.
He started with a restaurant. Then in 1896 he put up Holbrook's first brick store building, stocked it himself, and ran it as a general merchant selling dry goods and, this being Holbrook, fine wines and whiskies. He painted signs. And he was a photographer, out making pictures of townspeople and the country around them across Navajo and Apache counties, which means some of the earliest faces this town has on record may have been looking into his camera.
He died in March 1910 at forty-eight, in the middle of putting up something bigger, a modern business house made of cement blocks. He left a wife, Bessie, and a baby daughter named May. You'll find him in Row 10.
The Chinese community in frontier Arizona was almost entirely men, because the law of the day made bringing a family over nearly impossible. Ghuey is a good reminder that the people who actually built Holbrook came from a lot farther away than the usual Old West story lets on.
