It's going to be a warm one this week, with highs hitting 97 and lows dipping down to 67. That's a pretty wide swing, so don't be surprised if the evenings feel almost comfortable after a scorcher of a day.
Stormy weather is in the mix too, so you'll want to keep an eye on the sky. It's that classic Arizona summer combination, blazing sun one moment and rolling clouds the next, so plan accordingly and stay flexible.
Around Town This Week
The Bijou Teen Center is putting teens to work on something the whole town gets to enjoy: building Little Free Libraries, those take a book, leave a book boxes you see around town. It's free for ages 13 to 18, no experience needed, Monday from 5:15 to 6:30pm at 1002 W Hopi Dr. Can't make it? A second session runs Monday the 17th.
Holbrook's own nine hole course at 1500 Golf Course Rd is the definition of a low key round: wide desert views, a friendly local feel, and prices that beat any resort course by a mile. Nine holes runs about $15 walking and eighteen is around $25, with gas carts for rent if you'd rather ride. And here's the budget secret: the disc golf out there is completely free, so you can throw a round even if you've never swung a club. With highs pushing 97 this week, morning tee offs are your friend.

Talk of the Town
Something's happening around Holbrook, and it's worth talking about. Fresh posters have shown up in the visitor kiosks by the dog parks. An overgrown lot got its weeds pulled, and so did the entrance to town with the statue and the Welcome to Holbrook sign, the same one in the photo at the top of this issue. Carolyn and Tom Castillo have been repainting the big Route 66 map mural next to the Butterfield Steakhouse. And when the folks at Safeway saw the crews and volunteers out doing good around town, they donated 13 cases of water to keep everybody going.
Nobody organized this. It's just neighbors deciding Holbrook's worth the effort, and that's how a movement starts. Joining in doesn't take a committee or a budget, just a trash bag on your morning walk, half an hour with some clippers, a little paint where it's needed. Pick a corner of town and make it yours. And if you'd like some company while you're at it, the City's community clean up day is Wednesday, August 26 at Hunt Park, 6am to noon, just in time to get Holbrook shining before fair weekend.
For weeks the Motherload Market has been dropping hints about something big and loud rolling into town on September 6th, and now we know what it is. Rat Rod Magazine's Route 66 tour is coming through Holbrook, a convoy of wild, rusty, home built hot rods on an eight state, seven day, 1,800 mile run down the Mother Road.
Here's the plan for Sunday, September 6th: the convoy rolls in around 12:30pm, and everybody's invited to line West Hopi Drive to welcome them into town. From there the rat rods go on display at Motherload Market, 113 E Hopi Dr, while the crews stop for lunch. It's free, it's loud, and it's exactly the kind of thing Route 66 was made for. Mark it down now.
The Hidden Hundred
Each week we run a Holbrook photo clue, a landmark, a statue, or a piece of local history, with a few letters shaded in the answer. Figure out the answer, write down the shaded letters, and keep collecting.
