The Holbrook Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Fall Networking Meet and Greet. Stop by for an hour of easy networking with other local business owners and community members over warm cider and cookies. It is a relaxed chance to make new connections, catch up with familiar faces, and see what the Chamber has going on this season.

It's been close to ten years since Holbrook had a mud run, and it's finally coming back. The Petrified Mud Run is set for Saturday, October 24, and registration is open now.It's about two miles of hills, tires, water and mud with 20 obstacles along the way. You start by charging up a big dirt hill and dropping straight into a muddy ditch, so nobody stays clean for long, and you finish with one wide slide across the line.This isn't a boot camp. Every obstacle can be finished on your own, so you can run it hard in the 10am race wave or walk the whole thing laughing with your friends. The first man and first woman across the line in that race wave get their names on a trophy that stays right here in Holbrook.Entry is $25, or $150 for a team of up to 10. Everyone who crosses the finish line gets a Petrified Mud Run finisher hat, spectators are free, and the kids loop for ages 4 to 10 is free with no signup needed.So here's the question going around town: which business, church, team or family is brave enough to put a crew in the mud? Holbrook Lore
The Holbrook jail showed up on a train, already built
Most of downtown went up one brick at a time. The jail inside the old Navajo County Courthouse didn't. It rolled in on the railroad from St. Louis, already put together.
Prisoner art, still on a cell wall inside the old jail.Holbrook won the county seat from Winslow by 162 votes in 1895, and a year later voters approved a $15,000 bond for a courthouse and jail. The Zuck family deeded the county a tract called the City Park, and in June of 1898 the foundation was staked out with the stone on hand and the bricks being made right here in town.
The jail came from the Pauly Jail Building Company of St. Louis, the best-known jail builder in the country at the time. It was a free-standing steel unit with three cells, and it cost the county $3,000.
Here's the fun part. The county minutes show it installed on July 3, 1898, and two weeks later the brick walls still hadn't started going up. The courthouse was built around a jail that was already sitting there.
Court opened that December, and the jail stayed in use for 78 years, until county business moved south of town in 1976.
The museum's own history says it may be small and crowded, but no one ever escaped from those steel cells. The art on the walls, like the drawing here, was done by the prisoners who were held there, and it's still there today.
The building is now the Navajo County Historical Society Museum, at Arizona Street and Navajo Boulevard, and the cells are part of the visit. Next time you're downtown, step inside and take a look.
